Shelf Life of Shea Butter

What is the Shelf Life of Shea Butter?

Raw, Unrefined Shea Butter has a very long shelf-life, of between 12-24 months. Normally, it will last between 18-24 months easily. This is good news for skin care enthusiasts everywhere! Expired skin care products should not be put on your face, yuck.

Unrefined Shea Butter is filled with fatty acids which are very stable. If your shea is unrefined, then it is filled with fatty acids as well as Vitamins C, E, and A. These all contribute to an extra long shelf life when shea is stored properly. This does not apply to refined shea butter which we do not carry, anything refined can expire much more quickly since valuable nutrients stripped from the product.

How to Store Shea Butter Properly

Shea Butter does not mold on its own, but it can if water comes into the picture. This creates bacteria, which is never a good thing for skin care products. Water + Bacteria = Moldy Shea. Shea Butter can also spoil due to early oxidation. Oxidation is a very science-y word, but basically means that the longer a product is exposed to air, the more properties it loses. Shea Butter will lose its skin care properties and nutrients if it is exposed to too much air over long periods of time. This can lead to some seriously stinky shea.

To prevent this from happening, take some steps to ensure you’re storing it properly. You can store it in the original packaging from Better Shea Butter, or you can put it in a sealed glass container. Mason jars work great for this purpose. Make sure to keep water out of your shea butter, this will make shea butter spoil much more quickly. If it is in a clear jar, it needs to be kept out of direct sunlight.

You can keep shea butter just fine in room temperature, as long as it is not above 75 degrees Fahrenheit. If your house gets above this temperature, go ahead and put it in the fridge. Remember this: keep it cool and dry, to keep shea butter divine.

Did I receive rancid Shea Butter?

If your shea butter has a different scent than usual, have no fear. Sometimes, the scent may be stronger or lighter than normal. The scent can change due to weather and rain factors during harvest season in Ghana. The smell of rancid shea butter is very particular – a strong vinegary scent, which is immediately off-putting even from across the room. When it’s rancid, it’s straight-up STINKY!

The color can vary, too and does not mean it is rancid. You can receive shea with a mild scent and normal ivory color a dozen times, and then receive a brand new color and fragrance in your shea. If a newer shea nut is harvested, the color can have a green or gray tint. Normal ivory shea colors include ivory, grayish, yellowish, and even greenish.

But my Shea smells funny

If Shea Butter makes you Pee-Yew from across the room, there is a problem. However, if there is a particularly rainy season for harvesting, the shea can have a stronger scent than usual. To combat this scent, you simply melt down your shea and mix it with your favorite carrier oils and essential oils.

When  you mix in essential oils, follow these steps –

  1. First, melt down your shea butter to a liquid state, and stir occasionally.
  2. Leave it out in room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Add in your carrier oils and essential oils, and mix well.
  4. EXTRA HINT: You can then pour the mixture into an ice cube tray or silicone molds and let it harden for easy use before storing, and even easier measuring for recipes!

Easy peasy. The reason you let it sit in room temperature is to make sure the heat does not “kill” off the scent of the essential oils.

Show Review – Shut Eye

Shut Eye is a Hulu original, and so far there is only one season. I’m very much hoping for a season two! It really is a brilliant show.

The show centers around a husband and wife who are fake psychics – the husband does the work, really.

They work for a community of gypsies, or Roma, who take their cut of an expansive system of fake psychics. They employ con artists who do their jobs well, and who make the higher up Roma families rich.

there are a few spoilers ahead, so if you would rather not know them, just go watch the show before reading this next bit. It’s worth it!

The husband ends up gaining some true abilities after a head injury. He uses this to his advantage when he can, but it also takes a moral toll on him. He starts to see that what he does can be harmful, which he tries his best to ignore.

The husband and wife team take on a large con without letting their “boss” know, who is the head of a major player in a Roma family. Needless to say, things start to happen which don’t go well.

This show has so many great aspects to it. There are murders, drugs, sex, death, violence, plot twists, suspense, back stabbing, and more. I haven’t decided if the main characters are good people or not. Decide for yourself, and go check out this Hulu original series, right now!

Headache Roll On Recipe

If you suffer from headaches,  you are not alone. It is estimated that up to 38 million women, men, and children suffer from migraines. That number is astounding! There are tons of over the counter medications and prescription medications which can help. Some of us, however, would rather ditch the chemicals and side effects if at all possible. Pain pills have a plethora of side effects including nausea, dizziness, constipation, and even addiction. I prefer to steer clear of that.

This is a headache roll on recipe which uses essential oils to soothe that headache of yours. I hope you enjoy it!

What you need –

  • A Glass roll-on bottle
  • Carrier oil such as Almond Oil
  • Peppermint Essential Oil
  • Lavender Essential Oil
  • Rosemary Essential Oil
  • Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Put two drops of each essential oil into your glass roll-on bottle. Fill up the rest of your bottle with your almond oil or carrier oil. Make sure to leave a small amount of space at the top. Put the roller ball back on tight, and shake well before each use. Roll on a small amount behind your ears, on the side of your face just above your cheek bone (while avoiding anywhere near the eye area), and on the bottoms of your feet. This can be a preventative measure, or you can roll this blend on once you feel the onset of a headache or migraine. I hope you’ve enjoyed this recipe! What do you do to combat headaches naturally?

DIY Anti Aging Face Cream

DIY Anti Aging Face Cream

Anti-aging facial products are all the rage in stores. You can buy brands with claims like “look 10 years younger instantly,” or, “permanent results in 2 weeks or less!” These claims and products may work temporarily, but in the long run these products are more damaging and can cause skin to age prematurely over time. Products in stores are filled with toxic ingredients like parabens, petroleum by-products, and even carcinogens. Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs what you put on it. Make sure the ingredients you’re putting on your skin aren’t harsh or toxic! Here is a DIY Anti Aging Face Cream with no toxic ingredients. It’s all natural, and you won’t have to worry about it causing blemishes or allergic reactions due to unnatural ingredients.

Woman holding moisturizing facial cream

Materials & Ingredients:

  • A Glass container with a lid that screws on tightly. Glass is the best material to store all natural products in, and essential oils will not eat away at glass. Plastics can seep into all natural products.
  • 1/3 cup Raw Shea Butter. Shea Butter is ultra-hydrating, and provides protection against free-radicals. Free-radicals can cause skin to age faster, which is not something you want to happen!
  • 1/4 cup Organic Coconut Oil. Coconut oil is extremely beneficial to your skin, providing intense moisture and anti-oxidants.
  • 20 drops Rosehip Seed Oil. This oil has been used as a healing agent since Ancient Egyptian Times. The vitamins and fatty acids it contains makes this ingredient a prime fighter against fine lines and age spots.
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil. This essential oil has many uses and has antiseptic properties. It calms your skin, and makes your anti aging face cream smell like a dream!

  • Using a double boiler on low heat, melt down your Shea Butter and Coconut Oil until well melted. This should take about 10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and turn off the stove.
  • In a glass bowl, let your melted mixture sit for about 2 hours in room temperature. You don’t want your other oils to lose any of their fantastic properties for coming into contact with too much heat!
  • Add in your Rosehip Seed Oil and Lavender Essential Oil.
  • Mix well using a Kitchen Aid or hand mixer for about 5 minutes.
  • Place your mixture in the fridge over night.
  • The next day, take out your mixture and let it sit for about 2 more hours in room temperature.
  • Mix thoroughly again. Your finalized mixture will have a wonderful texture similar to lotion.
  • Store your mixture in your glass container. Keep away from heat and moisture, and make sure to put the lid on tight after each time you use it.

That’s it! Now you have an all natural, DIY Anti Aging Face Cream you can use in the morning and at night. Make sure you have a clean face before you apply it, so it will work its best. Voila!

DIY Perfume Using Essential Oils

DIY Perfume Using Essential Oils

Perfume makes you look and feel great! Who doesn’t want to smell absolutely scrumptious? However, store bought perfumes are not regulated by a government entity or organization for ingredients. Fragrances you purchase can have any number of toxic ingredients that are terrible for your skin. Perfumes are also incredibly expensive! Why not make your own DIY Perfume using essential oils? It’s a fraction of the cost, and there are no potentially toxic ingredients to worry about.

  • A small glass perfume bottle or a handy, travel-size roll-on bottle
  • 10 drops essential oils of your choice (I like using lavender, rose, and chamomile)
  • A carrier oil (I like to use sweet almond oil because it adds more sweet fragrance)

In your perfume bottle or roll-on bottle, add in your 10 drops of essential oils. Fill up the rest of your bottle leaving a small amount of space at the top with your carrier oil. Seal your container and shake to mix all ingredients well. It’s that easy! Shake each time you use your DIY perfume using essential oils, to ensure that all ingredients are properly mixed. Don’t forget that citrus essential oils are phototoxic , and always read up on the essential oils you use.

DIY Skin Care & Essential Oils

I’ve been using essential oils for a while now, and I have recently been making some pretty awesome skin care recipes using Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, Essential Oils, Sweet Almond Oil, and several other all natural ingredients.

It’s important to me to use all natural ingredients, free of toxins and chemicals. I don’t care to age prematurely, which is what chemicals and preservatives do to the skin. Unnatural ingredients strip the skin of moisture, which is one of the reasons it causes you to age prematurely. You may even see some new wrinkles pop up after using toxic products…yikes!

In the next several weeks, I’ll be posting all natural DIY skin care products you can make yourself at home! These recipes are easy, and I’d say they’re at a “beginner” DIY level. I don’t usually make products that have more than five or six ingredients. This is good news for you, too! If you have a request and would like to know a recipe for a particular product, please comment or send me an e-mail. I’ll do my best to write at least one recipe per week. However, I do write blogs for multiple websites, so please be patient 🙂

What to pack on a short Summer trip

What to pack on a short Summer trip

Short trips in the Summer time… could you ask for a better mini vacation? My short trips in the Summer are usually one of two places. Galveston, Texas or Lake Charles, LA. Tomorrow, my aunt and I are opting for a fun trip to Lake Charles casino hotel, LA’uberge!

This is titled as a Summer trip, even though it’s still Spring. Why? We live in the South…there is no Spring! Here is a list if what to pack on a short Summer trip

Sandals – why pack real shoes? This is Summer, baby!

Underwear – this can be a pain to buy at your destination if you forget to pack some undies.

Tank tops & T-shirts – don’t over pack, if it’s a three day trip, pack 3 tops.

One dress – just in case you find yourself wanting to go out somewhere fancy-like

One pair of pants, and one pair of shorts – it’s a short trip, and you don’t need to change your bottoms EVERY day.

Sunglasses – ’nuff said!

Toiletries – use some smaller travel containers and make sure to fill them with your shampoo, conditioner, and Sun Block. This will prevent your items from over filling your bag! Don’t forget your toothbrush and toothpaste. You may want to also pack your favorite facial cleanser in a travel size container.

Deodorant – you can even make your own to take. Just put it in a smaller, travel size container.

A swimsuit – if you plan on swimming or sun bathing, this is an essential item.

Your phone charger – phone addiction aside, you’ll need your phone charger in case of emergencies, and in case you get separated from who you’re traveling with.

A First Aid kit – bring some band aids, a little bit of gauze, and alcohol wipes as the minimum first aid kit items.

Cash – it’s easier to budget if you spend cash and separate the cash into envelopes for each day. It’s okay to splurge, but you won’t want to break the bank.

Lady products – aunt Flo can strike at any moment. Be prepared!

Luxury items – if you want to bring make up, moisturizer, or other beauty and jewelry products, try to keep it to a minimum. It can end up taking up a lot of space!

There you have it. Read this post whenever you take a mini vacation, and be prepared to know what to pack on a short Summer trip!

The Best All Natural Product Company

I spend a lot of time making DIY creations at home. I’ll be adding more blog posts with recipes soon, promise!

When I make these creations, there is one company I turn to for the best shea butter, cocoa butter, and mango butter. It’s truly the best all natural product company. The company is called Better Shea Butter and they rock! Not only do they have the best quality products, their customer service is on point. Questions I’ve sent them have typically taken less than a day to respond, and sometimes not even an hour.

Not only do they have awesome products and customer service, but they have giveaways on their Facebook all the time. They hosted a giveaway for samples of each of their products, and they only asked for fans to share their page and posts to be entered.

Well, guess what? They sent free samples to literally everyone who shared their page and their post, including myself. Here’s what the samples look like:

Let me tell you, their cocoa butter smells like delicious chocolate. Don’t eat it, but spread it all over yourself! You will smell like the world’s nicest Valentine’s present.

I truly can’t get enough of this company’s products. I’m hooked!

Supernatural Houston Convention

So when I’m being a typical Texas house potato, Supernatural is one of the shows I can binge watch in between work and…sleep. If you have not watched the show, I highly recommend that you start! Seasons one through ten are available on Netflix, my preferred method of binging.

I recently ventured out of the house on February 13th to attend the Supernatural Convention in Houston with my dear friend and fellow Supernatural nerd, Corrie. It was pretty pricey by my standards for an outing, but it was oh so worth it. No, I didn’t go on a day when Jensen Ackles (Dean) or Jared Padalecki  (Sam) would be there. However, I went on the day when Jim Beaver (Bobby Singer) and Misha Collins (Castiel) were there.

Oh, Misha.

Ah-hem…. anyways…

I’ve only been to one other “con,” and this one definitely beat out that one. Instead of focusing on dozens of different Fandoms, this convention was specifically for fans of Supernatural, which I felt was a better option for fans. The event coordinators definitely knew what they were doing when they set this convention up. The time line of events was adhered to, which meant fans knew where to be and when.

Throughout the entire convention, there was a sort of auditorium set up in the hotel which allowed for each actor to be allotted about 45 minutes to answer questions from select audience members. At different times, if you had purchased a photo op with an actor, you would know to go line up at a room outside of this auditorium. These photo ops were filled with adrenaline and excitement! Here were the two I opted for-

Jim Beaver and…

Misha Collins!!

The actors were more than happy to pose in almost any way requested. This made it even more up close and personal. Supernatural fans really have it better than just about any other Fandom.

The merchandise booths had quality items at a reasonable price, and the vendors were very friendly and helpful. If you had a question about anything, they were the first to offer up some much needed information.

Everyone was personable, funny, and wonderful in general. This includes the actors and the fans. Everyone was simply happy to be a part of it all. The show inspires many, and has uber relatable characters. It makes you feel good to meet people who had humble, budget constricted beginnings, who later became a sensation.

I will be returning again next year, and will be meeting Jared and Jensen for certain. Is it weird that I’m already excited and it’s a year away? Maybe. But this blog is a total judge free zone. Get off my blog and go watch the show!!

Google Ad Words – A Key for Success

Do you have a Google ad words account? Are you utilizing it to bring customers to your local or online business? If so, you are on the right track! If you’re not, I have question for you… why?

To some it’s obvious, and to others, they may not understand the power of having a higher Google placement. Consider this: 80% of consumers utilize search engines to find products and services. That’s a huge number.
Over 60% of consumers are using Google search specifically. If you want  customers from these astounding numbers, you’re going to need a high Google placement.

If you are having trouble reaching a high Google ranking organically by means of fantastic website SEO keywords and SEO optimized blogs, your only other truly viable option is to use Google Ads with Ad Words.

Think about the last time you used a search engine to find a product or service. Did you click on page 2, or did you find what you were looking for on page 1? Statistically, chances are you didn’t even have to reach the bottom of page one. Your potential customers are looking on page one of Google , and that’s where you need to be.

Google Ad Words, your website, your blog, your Facebook and your other social media channels should all be consistent. Key words used in your website for example, should be utilized as key words in your Google ads. Consistency is key!

If you need more information on Google Ads and which key words you should be utilizing for your business specifically, feel free to contact me. I offer marketing consultations and advice which can be very useful in gaining customers and growing your business.
